Mayer's relation from applying the first law at constant pressure.

Consider 1 mole of an ideal gas. At constant volume, all heat supplied raises internal energy only (no work): raising temperature by dTdT needs heat dQ=Cv dT=dUdQ = C_v\,dT = dU (since dUdU depends only on TT for an ideal gas, this defines dUdU generally, at any constant volume or not).

At constant pressure, raising temperature by the same dTdT needs heat dQ=Cp dTdQ = C_p\,dT, and by the first law this heat both raises internal energy by the same dU=Cv dTdU=C_v\,dT and does external work dW=P dVdW = P\,dV:

Cp dT=Cv dT+P dVC_p\,dT = C_v\,dT + P\,dV …
