A process is a path of change of state variables; common special cases include isothermal, adiabatic, isobaric, isochoric.

A thermodynamic process is the manner in which the state of a system (specified by variables such as pressure PP, volume VV, and temperature TT) changes from one equilibrium state to another.

Two types (any two valid):

  1. Isothermal process: occurs at constant temperature (T=T= constant); ΔU=0\Delta U = 0 for an ideal gas.
  2. Adiabatic process: occurs with no heat exchange with the surroundings (Q=0Q=0); ΔU=−W\Delta U = -W. …
