Parthenocarpic fruits develop from the ovary without fertilisation and are usually seedless, as in banana.

Normally, fruit development follows successful pollination and fertilisation of the ovule, with the ovary wall developing into the pericarp and the fertilised ovules developing into seeds. In parthenocarpy, the ovary develops into a fruit even though fertilisation has not occurred (either naturally, or induced artificially by application of growth hormones such as auxins or gibberellins), so the resulting fruit lacks true seeds.
