Dioscorea (yam) is a climbing vine that shows two distinct modes of vegetative propagation. The primary mode is through underground tubers -- swollen, food-storing modified stems that lie beneath the soil. Each tuber contains stored food reserves and dormant buds ('eyes'); when planted, these buds sprout, using the stored food to establish a new independent plant, exactly like propagation in potato.
The second mode is through bulbils, which are small, rounded, tuber-like vegetative outgrowths that develop in the axils of the leaves on the aerial climbing stem. Bulbils are essentially miniature tubers formed above ground rather than below it. When they mature, they drop off the parent vine (or are collected and planted), and each bulbil is capable of sprouting on its own into a completely new plant, genetically identical to the parent.
