The typical mature embryo sac is 7-celled and 8-nucleate: an egg apparatus (egg cell + 2 synergids) at the micropylar end, 3 antipodal cells at the chalazal end, and a central cell with 2 polar nuclei.

Since a diagram cannot be drawn here, the structure of a mature (Polygonum-type) embryo sac is described part by part, exactly as it would appear labelled inside the ovule:

  1. Micropylar end (bottom, facing the micropyle): contains the egg apparatus, made up of three cells arranged side by side -- one large, central egg cell (oosphere), flanked on either side by two smaller synergid cells. Each synergid bears, at its tip nearest the micropyle, a specialised thickened structure called the filiform apparatus, which chemically guides and directs the growing pollen tube into the embryo sac.
  2. Chalazal end (top, opposite the micropyle): contains three small cells called antipodal cells, which lie clustered together and generally play a nutritive role, degenerating soon after fertilisation. …
