The functional megaspore is the first cell of the female gametophyte because the embryo sac develops entirely from it by mitotic (free-nuclear) division.

Working

During megasporogenesis, the diploid megaspore mother cell (MMC) inside the nucellus undergoes meiosis to produce a linear tetrad of four haploid megaspores. In the most common (monosporic) mode of development, only one of these four megaspores -- usually the one at the chalazal end -- survives and is called the functional megaspore; the other three degenerate.
