In the ovule of many flowering plants, the integument(s) surrounding the nucellus can differentiate into distinct layers as the ovule matures. The innermost layer of the inner integument, which comes to lie in close contact with the nucellus and subsequently the embryo sac once the nucellus is consumed during embryo-sac development, is called the endothelium. This layer frequently becomes densely cytoplasmic and glandular, and because of its position and nutritive role -- absorbing and passing nutrients inward to the developing embryo sac, embryo and endosperm -- it is sometimes referred to as the integumentary tapetum, drawing an analogy with the nutritive tapetum layer of the anther.
