Step 1. Define bioremediation. The chapter defines bioremediation as 'the use of microorganisms or plants to clean up environmental pollution', applied to wastewater, industrial waste and solid waste, and specifically to removing oil, petrochemical residues, pesticides or heavy metals from soil or groundwater - often cheaper and more sustainable than physical/chemical remediation.

Step 2. Give plant/fungus-based examples. Phytoremediation uses plants to remediate environmental pollutants; mycoremediation uses fungi for the same purpose.
