This genetically engineered strain of Pseudomonas putida was created by introducing multiple hydrocarbon-degrading plasmids -- each originally coding for the breakdown of a different class of hydrocarbon -- into a single bacterial cell. The resulting 'superbug' can metabolise a broad range of hydrocarbon components present in crude oil far more efficiently than any single natural strain, making it useful for bioremediation of oil spills at sea and on land.
