Gametogenesis is the meiotic process that converts diploid germ cells in the gonads into haploid gametes, occurring as spermatogenesis in males and oogenesis in females.

Gametogenesis takes place in the primary sex organs (gonads). In males, it occurs in the seminiferous tubules of the testis as spermatogenesis, where diploid spermatogonia undergo mitotic multiplication, then meiosis (via primary and secondary spermatocytes) to eventually produce haploid spermatids, which mature (spermiogenesis) into motile spermatozoa. In females, it occurs in the ovary as oogenesis, where diploid oogonia give rise to primary oocytes that undergo meiosis I (arrested at prophase I until puberty) to form a secondary oocyte and the first polar body, with meiosis II being completed only if fertilisation occurs.
