The corpus luteum is a hormone-secreting structure formed after ovulation, which degenerates into the scar-like corpus albicans if pregnancy does not occur.

Corpus luteum:

  • Formed from the remnants of the Graafian follicle after it releases the ovum (ovulation).
  • Composed of large, lutein-containing cells and appears yellowish, hence the name ('yellow body').
  • Its main function is to secrete progesterone (along with some estrogen), which maintains and prepares the endometrium (uterine lining) for implantation and supports early pregnancy.
  • If fertilisation and implantation occur, the corpus luteum is maintained (initially by hCG from the developing embryo) and continues secreting progesterone through early pregnancy.

Corpus albicans:

  • If fertilisation does not occur, the corpus luteum degenerates about 10–14 days after ovulation.
