In males, the Sertoli cells lining the seminiferous tubules of the testis, besides nourishing developing sperm, secrete the hormone inhibin. Rising levels of inhibin signal to the hypothalamus and anterior pituitary that spermatogenesis is proceeding adequately, and inhibin then suppresses further secretion of Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) through a negative feedback loop, preventing excessive stimulation of the testis.
