Normally, the fertilised egg travels down the fallopian tube and implants in the endometrial lining of the uterus. In an ectopic pregnancy, implantation instead occurs at an abnormal site -- most frequently within the fallopian tube itself (a 'tubal pregnancy'), though it can occasionally occur on the ovary, the cervix, or elsewhere within the abdominal cavity. Because these sites (especially the narrow fallopian tube) cannot accommodate a growing embryo the way the uterus can, an ectopic pregnancy usually cannot proceed to term and poses a serious risk: as the embryo grows, it can rupture the tube or organ, causing severe internal haemorrhage tha …
