A scalar quantity has only magnitude (a number and a unit) and no associated direction; scalars combine by ordinary algebra.

A scalar quantity is a physical quantity that can be completely described by a single number (its magnitude) together with its unit -- it has no direction associated with it. Scalars are combined using the ordinary rules of algebra (simple arithmetic addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).

Examples of scalar quantities:

  • Mass (e.g. 5 kg)
  • Length or distance (e.g. 10 m)
  • Time (e.g. 20 s)
  • Temperature (e.g. 300 K) …
