Biofertilizers are living/biological formulations of microorganisms -- bacteria, cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), or fungi -- which, when applied to seed, soil, or root, enhance the availability of key nutrients (mainly nitrogen and phosphorus) to plants, either by fixing atmospheric nitrogen, solubilising insoluble soil phosphates, or promoting root growth, thereby improving overall soil fertility.
Examples:
- Rhizobium -- symbiotic nitrogen-fixing bacteria living in the root nodules of leguminous plants (Fabaceae).
- Azotobacter and Azospirillum -- free-living/associative nitrogen-fixing bacteria used with non-leguminous crops (cereals).
- Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) such as Anabaena and Nostoc -- free-living nitrogen fixers, especially important in flooded paddy fields; the Azolla-Anabaena symbiotic association is also used as a biofertilizer in rice cultivation.
- Mycorrhiza -- fungal symbiotic association with plant roots that improves phosphorus and water uptake.
- Phosphate-solubilising bacteria (PSB), e.g. certain Pseudomonas and Bacillus species, convert insoluble soil phosphate compounds into forms plants can absorb.
Benefits:
- Reduce dependence on costly, energy-intensive synthetic chemical fertilisers, lowering farmers' input costs. …
