Agrobacterium tumefaciens naturally transfers DNA into plants, and this ability is exploited as a gene-transfer vector.

Agrobacterium tumefaciens is a soil-dwelling, Gram-negative phytopathogenic bacterium that causes crown gall disease in many dicot plants. It carries a large Ti (tumour-inducing) plasmid, a segment of which -- the T-DNA -- is naturally transferred from the bacterium into the plant cell's nuclear genome, where it integrates and expresses genes that cause tumour (gall) formation and synthesis of opines.
