Single Cell Protein (SCP) is the term used for the dried cellular biomass (protein, along with carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals) obtained from the mass cultivation of microorganisms -- bacteria (e.g. Methylophilus methylotrophus), yeasts (e.g. Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Candida utilis), filamentous fungi, and algae/cyanobacteria (e.g. Spirulina, Chlorella) -- typically grown on cheap, often waste-derived substrates such as molasses, whey, agricultural residues or petroleum by-products. Its main uses are:
- Human food supplement -- SCP is very rich in protein (often 40-70% by dry weight) as well as essential amino acids, vitamins (especially B-complex) and minerals, and can be used to supplement diets in regions facing protein-calorie malnutrition.
- Animal, poultry and fish feed -- SCP is widely incorporated into livestock, poultry and aquaculture feed as an economical protein source, reducing dependence on conventional feed like soybean or fishmeal.
- Rapid, resource-efficient production -- microorganisms multiply extremely fast and SCP production does not require large tracts of agricultural land, being largely independent of climate and season, unlike conventional crop or animal protein production. …
