Biotechnology is the deliberate, controlled use of a living system - an organism, tissue, cell, organelle, or isolated enzyme - to convert raw material into something of greater value, a term coined by the Hungarian engineer Karl Ereky in 1919. It rests on two foundational principles. The first is genetic engineering: the ability to alter the genetic material of cells, plants and animals, to introduce genes of interest into another host organism, and thereby confer a desired characteristic on that organism (or on the recipient plant or animal population). The second is maintaining an aseptic (microbial-contamination-free) environment while growing only the desired microbe or cell in large quantities, to manufacture a biotechnology-based product - enzymes, vaccines, antibiotics, antibodies and more - at commercial scale.
