The Contact process manufactures sulphuric acid in three main stages. Stage 1: sulphur (or sulphide ores) is burnt in air to give sulphur dioxide: S+O2→SO2\text{S} + \text{O}_2 \rightarrow \text{SO}_2 Stage 2: the SO2\text{SO}_2 is catalytically oxidised with more oxygen over a vanadium(V) oxide catalyst, at about 720 K and 2 bar pressure: 2SO2+O2⇌V2O5720 K, 2 bar2SO32\text{SO}_2 + \text{O}_2 \underset{720\text{ K},\ 2\text{ bar}}{\overset{\text{V}_2\text{O}_5}{\rightleftharpoons}} 2\text{SO}_3 Stage 3: rather than adding the SO3\text{SO}_3 directly to water (which would form a hard-to-condense acid mist), it is absorbed into concentrated sulphuric acid to give oleum (pyrosulphuric/disulphuric acid): SO3+H2SO4→H2S2O7\text{SO}_3 + \text{H}_2\text{SO}_4 \rightarrow \text{H}_2\text{S}_2\text{O}_7 The oleum is then carefully diluted with the correct amount …
