White phosphorus consists of discrete P4\text{P}_4 tetrahedral molecules, four phosphorus atoms at the corners of a tetrahedron bonded to one another by single covalent bonds, with every internal P-P-P angle a strained 60∘60^\circ; separate P4\text{P}_4 units are held together in the solid only by weak van der Waals forces, making it a soft, low-melting molecular solid. Red phosphorus, by contrast, is a polymeric solid: obtained by heating white phosphorus in an inert atmosphere at around 573 K, it forms when one P-P bond of the P4\text{P}_4 tetrahedron is opened and the resulting units link end-to-end into long chains of linked, opened tetrahedra, which further cross-link and pack into an extended, three-dimensional network.
