Oxides are classified by their acid-base behaviour toward water, acids and bases. Na2O\text{Na}_2\text{O} is a basic oxide: sodium is a strongly electropositive metal, and Na2O\text{Na}_2\text{O} dissolves in water to give the base NaOH (Na2O+H2O→2NaOH\text{Na}_2\text{O} + \text{H}_2\text{O} \rightarrow 2\text{NaOH}) and reacts with acids to give a salt and water. SO2\text{SO}_2 is an acidic oxide: sulphur is a non-metal, and SO2\text{SO}_2 dissolves in water to give sulphurous acid (SO2+H2O→H2SO3\text{SO}_2 + \text{H}_2\text{O} \rightarrow \text{H}_2\text{SO}_3) and reacts with bases to give a sulphite salt and water. Al2O3\text{Al}_2\text{O}_3 is an amphoteric oxide: aluminium sits near the metal/non-metal borderline, and Al2O3\text{Al}_2\text{O}_3 reacts with both acids (giving AlCl3\text{AlCl}_3-type salts) and bases (giving aluminate salts, e. …
