Xenon oxydifluoride, XeOF2\text{XeOF}_2, is obtained by partial, carefully controlled, low-temperature hydrolysis of XeF4\text{XeF}_4 with a limited amount of water (rather than the complete hydrolysis that gives XeO3\text{XeO}_3): XeF4+H2O→XeOF2+2HF\text{XeF}_4 + \text{H}_2\text{O} \rightarrow \text{XeOF}_2 + 2\text{HF} Structurally, XeOF2\text{XeOF}_2 is T-shaped, exactly like the neutral XX3′\text{XX}'_3-type interhalogens (ClF3\text{ClF}_3/BrF3\text{BrF}_3) described earlier in this chapter. Xenon is sp3dsp^3d hybridised, with five electron domains around it in the underlying trigonal bipyramid: one Xe=O bond, two Xe-F bonds, and two lone pairs. The two lone pairs occupy the two equatorial positions (to minimise repulsion), leaving the oxygen and the two fluorine atoms to …
