Part (a)

Selection is the process of choosing the most suitable person from among the prospective candidates for a job; it is a series of successive hurdles that a candidate must clear. The first four steps are:

  1. Preliminary screening: After applications are received, they are screened to weed out candidates who obviously do not meet the basic qualifications or requirements of the job. This preliminary sorting saves the time and cost of processing clearly unsuitable applicants and leaves a manageable, more relevant pool.

  2. Selection tests: The shortlisted candidates are then put through one or more selection tests designed to measure characteristics relevant to the job — for example intelligence tests, aptitude tests, personality tests, trade or proficiency tests, and interest tests. These provide an objective assessment of a candidate's abilities and suitability.

  3. Employment interview: The candidate then faces a formal, in-depth conversation with the interviewer(s). The interview seeks additional information about the candidate, allows a direct assessment of their suitability, personality and communication, and also gives the candidate information about the job and the organisation. …
