Ganesh Jain effectively applied Maslow's Need Hierarchy Theory by identifying and satisfying the Security Needs of temporary employees and the Esteem Needs of permanent employees to motivate them.

Motivation is the process of stimulating people to act to achieve desired goals. Understanding what drives individuals is crucial for effective management. One of the most widely recognized frameworks for comprehending human motivation is Abraham Maslow's Need Hierarchy Theory. Maslow proposed that people are driven by a set of universal needs, arranged in a hierarchical order, meaning that lower-level needs must be satisfied before higher-level needs become motivators. Ganesh Jain, as a discerning manager, recognized this fundamental principle and tailored his motivational strategies accordingly.

(i) Identified Needs of Employees

Ganesh Jain correctly understood that different employees might be at different levels of the needs hierarchy, even within the same team. By observing their employment status and performance, he identified specific needs for Kavya, Ritesh, Pooja, and Madhav.

  • Kavya and Ritesh: As temporary employees, their primary concern would naturally revolve around job stability and future security. By making them permanent and offering a good pension plan, Ganesh Jain addressed their Security Needs.

    • Security Needs encompass the desire for physical and emotional safety, job security, stability of income, and protection from threats. For temporary workers, the uncertainty of their employment status is a significant source of insecurity. Making them permanent and providing a pension plan directly alleviates these concerns, offering a sense of stability and a secure future.
  • Pooja and Madhav: Being permanent employees who consistently met targets, their basic security needs were already met. For such individuals, higher-level needs become more prominent. By granting them "autonomy status," Ganesh Jain catered to their Esteem Needs.

    • Esteem Needs relate to the desire for self-respect, autonomy, achievement, recognition, status, and attention. When employees are given autonomy, it signifies trust in their abilities, acknowledges their competence, and provides them with a sense of control and importance in their work. This recognition boosts their self-esteem and provides a powerful motivator beyond mere financial or job security.
Note

It is important to distinguish between different levels of needs. While security needs focus on stability and protection, esteem needs move towards self-worth, recognition, and a sense of accomplishment. A manager's ability to identify these distinct needs is key to effective motivation.

(ii) Assumptions of Maslow's Need Hierarchy Theory

Maslow's Need Hierarchy Theory is built upon several fundamental assumptions that explain how human needs influence behavior and motivation. Two key assumptions are: …
