An ALP line has four fields — label, mnemonic, operands and comment — of which only the mnemonic is compulsory.
An assembly language program is a series of lines, and each line is written in a fixed format so the assembler can translate it correctly. The general form of an assembly language instruction is:
[label:] mnemonic [operands] [; comment]
The four fields are:
- Label (optional) — a name that marks a memory location so it can be referred to later (for example a jump target). It is followed by a colon.
- Mnemonic (compulsory) — the command that tells the CPU what to do, e.g. MOV, ADD, SUBB.
- Operands (optional) — the data items or registers the instruction acts on, e.g. the destination and source (as in ADD A, B).
- Comment (optional) — explanatory text for the reader, written after a semicolon (;); it is ignored by the assembler. …
