Q.A shopkeeper's monthly electricity bill BB (in rupees) is a linear function of the number of units uu consumed. When 200200 units are used the bill is ₹1500, and when 350350 units are used the bill is ₹2250. Express BB as a function of uu, and hence find the fixed monthly charge and the bill for 400400 units.

Since BB is linear in uu, write B(u)=mu+cB(u)=mu+c, where mm is the charge per unit and cc is the fixed monthly charge. We are given two points on the line: (200,1500)(200,1500) and (350,2250)(350,2250).

Slope (charge per unit):

m=2250−1500350−200=750150=5.m=\frac{2250-1500}{350-200}=\frac{750}{150}=5.

So each unit costs ₹5, and B(u)=5u+cB(u)=5u+c.

Fixed charge. Substitute (200,1500)(200,1500):

1500=5(200)+c=1000+c ⇒ c=500.1500=5(200)+c=1000+c \ \Rightarrow\ c=500.

Hence

B(u)=5u+500.B(u)=5u+500.

The fixed monthly charge is c=B(0)=c=B(0)= ₹500.

Bill for 400400 units:

B(400)=5(400)+500=2000+500=2500.B(400)=5(400)+500=2000+500=2500. …
