Q.Write a short note on: a. Differentiation
Differentiation is the permanent maturation of a meristem-derived cell into a specialised, functional form.
Step 1. Cells derived from the apical meristem of the root or shoot undergo differentiation as they mature.
Step 2. This is a permanent change in the cell's structure and function -- for example, parenchyma cells in hydrophytes develop large schizogenous air spaces that give mechanical support, buoyancy and aeration.
Step 3. Differentiation is achieved at the cost of the cell's capacity to divide and redivide -- a fully differentiated cell is normally no longer meristematic.
Differentiation is the permanent change in structure and function by which a meristem-derived cell matures into a specialised form, losing its ability to divide in the process.
