Double fertilization is the simultaneous syngamy (male gamete + egg to zygote) and triple fusion (male gamete + secondary nucleus to primary endosperm nucleus) that occur together in the embryo sac of flowering plants.

Step 1 -- Pollen tube growth and entry. After a compatible pollen grain germinates on the stigma, its pollen tube grows down through the style and ovary and enters the ovule, most commonly through the micropyle (porogamy), guided along the way by chemical signals from the synergids.

Step 2 -- Gamete release. The pollen tube penetrates one of the two synergid cells, ruptures, and releases its contents, including the two non-motile male gametes carried inside it (a delivery method called siphonogamy, since the gametes cannot move on their own).

Step 3 -- Syngamy. One of the two released male gametes fuses with the haploid egg cell to form a diploid zygote. This is termed generative fertilization, and the zygote subsequently develops into the embryo.

Step 4 -- Triple fusion. The second male gamete fuses with the diploid secondary (definitive) nucleus of the central cell (itself already formed by the earlier fusion of the two polar nuclei), producing a triploid primary endosperm nucleus (PEN). This is termed vegetative fertilization, and the PEN develops, by repeated mitosis, into the nutritive endosperm.

Because both delivered male gametes are used in fusion events within the same embryo sac, one in syngamy, one in triple fusion, the overall process is called double fertilization, a mechanism unique to flowering plants, first described by Nawaschin.

For NEET and CBSE Class 12 Biology aspirants, note that the NCERT textbook treats this point identically; the Maharashtra Board syllabus follows the NCERT curriculum closely here.

✓Final answer

Double fertilization = syngamy (forming the diploid zygote) + triple fusion (forming the triploid primary endosperm nucleus), both achieved by the two male gametes carried into the embryo sac by one pollen tube.
