Commercial preparation of glucose: Starch is hydrolysed by boiling with dilute sulphuric acid (about 2–3%) at 393 K under pressure for a few hours:
The resulting solution is neutralised, decolourised with activated charcoal, filtered, and concentrated to crystallise glucose. (Industrially, enzymatic hydrolysis using diastase followed by maltase is also used.)
