A peptide bond is an amide linkage between amino acids; interhalogen compounds are covalent XX'n_n molecules with reactivity generally exceeding that of the individual halogens (except F2_2).

  1. Peptide linkage: The amide bond formed between the −COOH-COOH group of one amino acid and the −NH2-NH_2 group of another amino acid, with the elimination of a water molecule, is called a peptide linkage (−CO−NH−-CO-NH-). Peptide linkages join amino acid residues together to form peptides and proteins.
  2. General characteristics of interhalogen compounds:
  • Formed by the direct combination of two different halogens (general formula XXn′XX'_n, e.g. ClFClF, BrF3BrF_3, IF5IF_5, IF7IF_7), where XX is the larger, less electronegative halogen and X′X' is the smaller, more electronegative one.

  • They are covalent, diamagnetic compounds.
