Haworth projection of -D-(+)-glucopyranose: Glucose exists predominantly as a six-membered pyranose ring formed between the C1 aldehyde carbon and the C5–OH oxygen. In the Haworth structure, the ring oxygen is placed at the back-right, C1 (anomeric carbon) at the right; for the -anomer, the newly formed –OH at C1 points below the plane of the ring (on the opposite side to the –CH₂OH at C5, which is drawn above the ring), while –OH groups at C2 (below), C3 (above) and C4 (below) follow the D-glucose configuration.
