Dehydrohalogenation of 2-chlorobutane favours the more substituted alkene (Zaitsev's rule); CFC-released chlorine radicals deplete the ozone layer.

Dehydrohalogenation of 2-chlorobutane: heating CH3−CHCl−CH2−CH3CH_3-CHCl-CH_2-CH_3 with alcoholic KOH removes HCl (E2 elimination). Two alkenes are possible depending on which β\beta-hydrogen is removed; by Zaitsev's rule, the more substituted (more stable) alkene predominates:

CH3−CHCl−CH2−CH3→alc. KOH, ΔCH3−CH=CH−CH3 (but-2-ene, major)+CH2=CH−CH2−CH3 (but-1-ene, minor)+KCl+H2OCH_3-CHCl-CH_2-CH_3 \xrightarrow{alc.\ KOH,\ \Delta} CH_3-CH=CH-CH_3\,(\text{but-2-ene, major}) + CH_2=CH-CH_2-CH_3\,(\text{but-1-ene, minor}) + KCl + H_2O
