Photoelectric effect: emission of electrons from a metal surface when light of sufficiently high frequency falls on it.

Photoelectric effect: The phenomenon in which electrons are emitted from the surface of a (usually metallic) material when electromagnetic radiation (light) of sufficiently high frequency (above a threshold value characteristic of that material) is incident on it. The emitted electrons are called photoelectrons.

(i) Stopping potential (V0V_0): The minimum retarding (negative) potential applied to the collector, with respect to the emitter, that is just sufficient to stop even the most energetic photoelectrons from reaching the collector, reducing the photoelectric current to exactly zero. It is related to the maximum kinetic energy of the emitted photoelectrons by eV0=KEmaxeV_0 = KE_{max}.
