Definition plus the classic phototube apparatus for studying it.

Definition: The photoelectric effect is the phenomenon of emission of electrons from the surface of certain metals when electromagnetic radiation (light) of suitable (sufficiently high) frequency is incident on them.

Experimental set-up: An evacuated glass/quartz tube houses a photosensitive metal plate C (cathode/emitter) and a collector plate A (anode). Monochromatic light of chosen frequency, admitted through a quartz window, falls on C, ejecting photoelectrons. A battery with a potential divider (rheostat) applies a variable potential difference between A and C, reversible in polarity through a commutator, and a voltmeter reads this potential; a sensitive microammeter in the circuit measures the resulting photocurrent.
