Capacitance of a Parallel Plate Capacitor Without and With Dielectric Medium Between the Plates

The standard PARALLEL PLATE capacitor consists of two thin conducting plates, each of area A, held parallel to one another at a suitable separation d apart, with one plate isolated and given a charge while the other is earthed. Having already established the GENERAL principle of a capacitor and the SERIES/PARALLEL combination rules (section 8.9), this section works out the specific capacitance FORMULA for this particular, most common geometry -- first for the simplest case of no dielectric at all between the plates (section 8.10.1), and then for the practically important case of a dielectric slab (partially or fully) filling the gap (section 8.10.2), which is exactly th …

What this figure shows. Two thin, flat, parallel conducting plates, each of area A, held a fixed distance d apart with a dielectric slab occupying (at least part of) the gap between them; one plate is shown isolated and carrying charge, the other is connected to earth -- the general construction diagram for the parallel plate capacitor that both following sub-sections analyse, first assuming no dielectric present and then with a dielectric slab explicitly included. …
