Surface tension equals the work done per unit increase in surface area; a soap bubble has two surfaces.

Relation between surface energy and surface tension: To increase the surface area of a liquid film by dAdA, work dWdW must be done against the inward-pulling surface tension force, and this work is stored as additional potential (surface) energy of the surface:

dW=T dA⇒T=dWdAdW = T\,dA \quad\Rightarrow\quad T = \frac{dW}{dA}

So numerically, surface tension equals the surface energy per unit area of the liquid surface.

Soap bubble numerical: A soap bubble has two free surfaces (inner and outer), so blowing it from zero radius to radius rr increases the total surface area by

ΔA=2×(4πr2−0)=8πr2\Delta A = 2\times(4\pi r^2 - 0) = 8\pi r^2 …
