A Light Emitting Diode (LED) is a heavily-doped p-n junction diode, usually made from a direct-band-gap semiconductor (e.g. GaAs, GaP, GaAsP), which emits visible (or near-visible) light when it is forward biased. Forward bias injects electrons and holes across the junction, and their recombination in the depletion region releases energy as photons — the emitted wavelength (colour) depends on the material's band gap.
