In 1971, the microbiologist Ananda Mohan Chakrabarty engineered a strain of Pseudomonas (Pseudomonas putida) by combining plasmids from four different naturally occurring Pseudomonas strains, each of which could individually degrade only one hydrocarbon component of crude oil (camphor, octane, xylene, and naphthalene). By transferring all four degradative plasmids into a single bacterial cell, he created a strain -- popularly nicknamed the 'superbug' -- capable of degrading multiple oil components simultaneously, useful in bioremediation of oil spills.
