Transcription is the process by which a single-stranded RNA molecule (mRNA, tRNA, or rRNA) is synthesised using one strand of DNA as a template, catalysed by the enzyme RNA polymerase. It proceeds in three stages: initiation (RNA polymerase binds a promoter sequence on the DNA and begins unwinding it), elongation (RNA polymerase moves along the template strand in the 3'->5' direction, synthesising the RNA transcript 5'->3', complementary and antiparallel to the template, incorporating ribonucleotides with uracil substituting for thymine), and termination (RNA polymerase reaches a terminator sequence, releasing the completed RNA transcript and diss …
