When it is used: CPR is administered in emergencies such as cardiac arrest, drowning, suffocation, electric shock, or choking, where a person's heartbeat and/or breathing has stopped.
Procedure (basic C-A-B sequence):
- Check responsiveness and call for emergency medical help.
- Compressions: place the heel of one hand on the centre of the chest, interlock the other hand, and give firm, rhythmic chest compressions (about 100–120 per minute, depressing the chest about 5 cm), allowing full chest recoil between compressions.
- Airway: tilt the head back and lift the chin to open the airway.
