AIDS (Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome) is caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), which destroys helper T-lymphocytes and weakens the immune system. HIV spreads through: unprotected sexual contact with an infected person; transfusion of infected blood; sharing of contaminated needles/syringes (as among drug addicts); and from an infected mother to her child during pregnancy, birth or breast-feeding. Since there is no complete cure, control depends on prevention by blocking these routes:

- Safe sexual practices — use of condoms, avoiding multiple/casual and unprotected sexual contacts, and staying faithful to one uninfected partner.
- Blood safety — screening all donated blood for HIV before transfusion; ensuring blood banks test their stock.
- Safe injections — using only sterile, disposable needles and syringes, and never sharing them; proper disposal of used needles.
- Prevention of mother-to-child transmission — providing anti-retroviral drugs to HIV-positive pregnant women and advising on safe delivery and feeding. …
