When an infected female Anopheles mosquito bites a human, it injects sporozoites into the bloodstream. These sporozoites travel to and invade liver cells (hepatocytes), where they undergo asexual multiple fission called exo-erythrocytic schizogony, producing large numbers of merozoites.
