Major signs:
- Weight loss of more than 10% of body weight.
- Chronic diarrhoea persisting for more than one month.
- Prolonged fever (either intermittent or constant) for more than one month.
Minor signs:
- Persistent cough for more than one month.
- Generalised, itchy (pruritic) dermatitis.
- Recurrent herpes zoster (shingles).
- Oropharyngeal candidiasis (oral thrush).
- Chronic, progressive or disseminated herpes simplex infection.
- Generalised lymphadenopathy (swelling of lymph nodes at more than one site).
Clinical case definition: the presence of at least two major signs together with at least one minor sign, in a patient with no other known cause of immunosuppression (such as cancer, severe malnutrition or long-term steroid use), is taken as clinically suggestive of AIDS.
