The Entamoeba histolytica cyst is ingested, excysts in the small intestine into trophozoites, which travel to and invade the large intestine's mucosa.

Amoebiasis is caused by the protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica. Infection begins when a person ingests food or water contaminated with the quadrinucleate infective cyst stage of the parasite. On reaching the small intestine, the alkaline pH and digestive enzymes cause excystation - the cyst wall breaks down and releases metacystic trophozoites (initially one cell that divides into eight small trophozoites). These actively motile trophozoites then pass down the gut and reach the large intestine (colon), their final destination.
