The scolex is the specialised anterior attachment organ of the adult Taenia solium (pork tapeworm), equipped with suckers and hooks for gripping the host intestine, with the germinative neck behind it giving rise to the rest of the worm's body.

General description

  • The scolex is a small, pear-shaped or globular structure, roughly 1 mm in diameter, forming the extreme anterior end of the adult tapeworm.
  • It functions purely as a holdfast (organ of attachment) and has no digestive, nervous sense, or reproductive structures of its own beyond a simple nerve ring and excretory ducts passing through it.

Labelled parts (as would appear in a diagram)

  1. Four suckers (acetabula) -- muscular, cup-like structures arranged in a symmetrical ring around the scolex; they grip the intestinal mucosa by suction and are the primary means of attachment.
  2. Rostellum -- a small, conical, retractile projection at the very tip (apex) of the scolex, which can be protruded or withdrawn.
  3. Double crown (circlet) of hooks -- borne on the rostellum, consisting of two rows of alternating large and small chitinous, curved hooks (typically around 22-32 hooks in total) that dig into the intestinal wall for firmer anchorage. This armed rostellum is diagnostic of T. solium and distinguishes it from the hookless (unarmed) T. saginata. …
