REM sleep is the active, dream-associated stage of sleep marked by rapid eye movements and near-total muscle paralysis.

REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep is one of the two broad stages of sleep (the other being NREM/non-REM sleep), occurring in cycles of roughly 90 minutes through the night, with REM periods becoming longer towards early morning.

Features of REM sleep:
