A stethoscope is used to listen to internal body sounds — heart, lungs, intestines and foetal heart — and to measure blood pressure.

A stethoscope is a medical instrument that amplifies and transmits internal body sounds to the examiner's ears. It has a chest-piece (with a diaphragm and bell) placed on the patient's body, connected by tubes to two ear-pieces. Listening to body sounds in this way is called auscultation.
