Stopping a drug or alcohol on which the body has become dependent produces a cluster of physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms, driven by the body's adjustment to the absence of the substance.

Regular use of drugs of abuse or alcohol causes the body to adapt physiologically to their continuous presence (tolerance and dependence). When intake is suddenly stopped or reduced, the person experiences withdrawal symptoms as the body readjusts. Commonly reported symptoms include anxiety, restlessness, and irritability; nausea and vomiting; profuse sweating; tremors, especially of the hands; insomnia or disturbed sleep; generalised muscle and body aches; and, in more severe cases of alcohol or certain drug dependence, seizures/convulsions, hallucinations or dangerous cardiovascular effects.
