Holes are majority carriers in a p-type semiconductor. The OR gate output is Y = A+B.
a) V–I characteristics of a p-n junction diode:
- Forward bias: Initially (below the 'knee'/threshold voltage, ~0.7 V for Si, ~0.3 V for Ge) very little current flows since the barrier potential opposes majority-carrier flow. Beyond the knee voltage, the barrier is overcome and current rises very steeply (almost vertically) with small increases in voltage.
- Reverse bias: Only a very small reverse saturation current (due to minority carriers, of the order of μA or less) flows, and it remains almost constant with increasing reverse voltage — until the breakdown voltage is reached, beyond which current rises sharply.
(The forward branch lies in the first quadrant rising steeply after the knee; the reverse branch is a near-flat line very close to the axis in the third quadrant.)
