Part (a): an accelerating/oscillating charge produces self-sustaining coupled E⃗\vec E–B⃗\vec B fields that propagate as an EM wave with fwave=fchargef_{\text{wave}}=f_{\text{charge}}.

Part (b): EM waves carry energy in their oscillating fields (Poynting vector); sunlight's radiation pressure (∼5×10−6\sim5\times10^{-6} Pa) is far too small compared with atmospheric pressure to be felt.

Part (a): Radiation by an Oscillating Charge

A static charge has only an electrostatic field, and a uniformly moving charge adds only a steady magnetic field — neither radiates. Radiation requires acceleration.

  1. An oscillating charge undergoes continuous acceleration, creating a time-varying electric field E⃗(t)\vec E(t) in the surrounding space.
  2. Faraday's law: a changing E⃗\vec E is accompanied by a changing B⃗\vec B: ∇×E⃗=−∂B⃗∂t\nabla\times\vec E=-\dfrac{\partial\vec B}{\partial t}.
  3. Ampère–Maxwell law: the changing B⃗\vec B regenerates E⃗\vec E: ∇×B⃗=μ0ε0∂E⃗∂t\nabla\times\vec B=\mu_0\varepsilon_0\dfrac{\partial\vec E}{\partial t}.
  4. This mutual regeneration lets the disturbance propagate through vacuum at c=1/μ0ε0c=1/\sqrt{\mu_0\varepsilon_0}.

Frequency relation. The field oscillations are driven by the source, so the radiated wave has the same frequency as the charge: …
